The Light We Hold
Mixed-media Light Fixture Sculpture, 45 x 85 cm
Installation view with and without the light panel mounted. Copyright the Artist.
This piece emerged out of my research at the Cast Court of Victoria and Albert Museum. It is a sculptural piece responding to the statue of David in the Cast Court. The light panel is a resin cast made over 3D-printed sculptural capturing of my re-enactment of David’s hand gestures. The sculpture of David is my artistic interlocutor because of his canonical status in art history. For hundreds of years, David represented ideal male beauty in Western art. Another reason lies in David’s ethically-controversial biblical figuration as both an exiled outlaw, a warrior who protected the weak, as well as someone who keeps a harem. The work is a way for me to co-inhabit the art historical space occupied by David. It becomes an emphasis of my presence, and the presence of the body of East-Asian female artists. It is designed as a light piece so as to empower and to bring hope to those who occupy the margins.
