Savoir  is a self-portrait that maps the inbetween linguistic and cultural world I occupy. It is drawn in Chinese Ink on 50 pages of A4 paper with translation notes. The notes on A4 paper are from my preparation for a consecutive translation exam in Mandarin and English. The notes are shorthand for both languages and belong to neither. Their meanings become indecipherable even for the translator themselves after a few minutes, as they are only retained in short-term memory. The content of the notes are political and topical (global news, government statements andofficials' speeches etc.). The landscape imagery is inspired by an iconic piece of poetry on utopia in Chinese culture by artist-scholar and ex-courtier, Tao Yuan Ming (365 - 427 AD).
