Hiraeth: Outbound follows protagonist Fleur’s mystical experience after discovering a pendant in a post-WWIII future; her interior journey intertwines with increasingly surreal visions of a road trip through Tibet; the protagonists of the road trip narrative strand, Jungney and Geoff, are coincidental travel companions. The three protagonists are mysteriously connected by their shared hiraeth for a restorative place of secure belonging – symbolic of our endangered planetary home – across temporal and geographical realms. Beyond its planetary metaphors, the film is also about belonging and non-belonging in different contexts, in relation to cultural identities, removed ethnic origins and religious beliefs.
